Psychotherapy and Counseling for Lawyers

Psychotherapy for Lawyers in New York and New Jersey

From a former attorney who practiced law for twenty years — offering therapy for lawyers and attorneys throughout New York and New Jersey.

As a lawyer, you work under constant pressure. Even if parts of the work are meaningful, it takes a toll. Constant deadlines and overwhelming workloads. Concerns about making partner, being a partner, satisfying clients, getting clients.

Over time, these pressures can lead to burnout, anxiety, depression, or a growing sense that something needs to change — in how you work, how you relate to others, or whether this path is still the right one. If work stress is the primary concern, there’s more on that here.

If you’ve found your way here, you likely already recognize that something isn’t working the way you’d want it to.

That’s where therapy can help.

Before becoming a psychotherapist, I practiced law for over twenty years. I understand the structure and culture of legal work — the billing pressure, the partnership dynamics, the particular difficulty of asking for help in a profession that prizes composure and certainty. I’ve sat where you’re sitting. That experience shapes every conversation we have.

Many lawyers approach the idea of therapy with some ambivalence — and that’s understandable. Lawyers are trained to see problems and anticipate downsides, to apply a critical lens to situations, to stay in control. Those are professional strengths. In your personal life, they can work against you — making it hard to tolerate uncertainty, to be vulnerable, or to fully engage with a situation rather than simply analyzing it. And if that critical lens has been turned inward — and you’ve been finding yourself coming up short — that’s one of the most common things I work on with attorneys.

Therapy with me is well suited to how lawyers think, not despite it. The same capacity for structured thinking that serves you professionally can be genuinely useful in this work. This isn’t free-flowing conversation for its own sake. It’s focused, purposeful work with a clear goal: increasing your satisfaction with your life. It’s a consistent block of time that gives you the space to think and talk about yourself, together with a reliable guide.

Our work focuses on understanding how you are approaching things — and developing more flexibility in how you respond.

In our work together, we focus on what is most relevant for you. Our work may include:

  • Work stress, pressure, and burnout
  • Anxiety, excessive worrying, and racing thoughts
  • Depression
  • Imposter syndrome
  • Difficulty relaxing or sleeping
  • Work-life balance
  • Career dissatisfaction and thinking about leaving law
  • Patterns that feel difficult to change

If you’re questioning whether law is still the right path, Career Transition Therapy may be where to start.

If you’re considering whether this might be helpful, the best way to find out is to speak. I offer a complimentary 20-minute phone consultation.
