About Joel G. Kosman, Esq., LCSW
Former attorney and licensed psychotherapist offering therapy in New York and New Jersey for professionals navigating stress, anxiety, burnout, relationships, and demanding careers.
Before becoming a psychotherapist, I practiced law for more than twenty years. During that time, I worked in a range of legal settings, including a large law firm, a smaller firm, and as Senior Investigative Counsel at the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office. I also clerked for a federal judge in the Southern District of New York, taught legal writing and advocacy at NYU School of Law, Columbia Law School, and New York Law School, and counseled law students at Columbia Law School.
Over time, I recognized that the work was no longer a good fit — that the parts of myself I most wanted to engage were not central to what I was doing. That recognition led me to make a deliberate mid-career transition into psychotherapy. It is an experience I draw on directly when working with professionals who find themselves questioning the direction of their own careers.
I returned to New York University to complete my training at the School of Social Work, and have since worked as a mental health clinician in a range of settings, including an inpatient psychiatric unit at a Westchester County hospital, New York University Counseling and Wellness Services, and the Psychotherapy Center for Gender and Sexuality. I have completed advanced psychoanalytic training at the Institute for Contemporary Psychotherapy and the Westchester Center for the Study of Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy, specialized training in the treatment of eating disorders, and training in Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy through the New York Center for Emotionally Focused Therapy.

In addition to my general clinical practice, I have particular experience working with lawyers, other professionals, and anyone navigating the pressures of a demanding career.
Throughout my own working life, I have experienced many of the things that bring people to therapy — including stress, anxiety, uncertainty, and periods of feeling stuck or unsure of direction. I understand both the external demands of professional life and the internal pressures that accompany them. Those experiences inform how I work.
Our work focuses on understanding how you are approaching things — and developing more flexibility in how you respond.
When we meet, you’ll find me thoughtful, attentive, and easy to speak with. I listen carefully, ask questions, and pay close attention to what you tell me. My background in both law and psychotherapy allows me to approach your situation from multiple perspectives — while staying grounded in what is most relevant to you.
I offer a complimentary 20-minute phone consultation.
