Couples Therapy in New York and New Jersey

Offering therapy for couples throughout New York and New Jersey.

We look to our intimate relationships to form the bedrock of our lives — emotionally and practically. When things are working well, a relationship offers security, companionship, and a place to return to. When things are not working well, the impact reaches into every part of daily life.

Couples therapy and relationship counseling offer a structured space to understand what is happening between you and your partner — and to work on it together.

Sometimes the signs are clear: open conflict, talk of separation, or a sense that the same arguments keep happening without resolution. But sometimes the signs are quieter.

If one or both partners are lawyers, I offer couples therapy specifically for lawyers and their partners.

You may notice patterns such as:

  • Avoiding difficult conversations rather than risking another argument
  • Replaying conflicts in your mind without being able to raise them directly
  • A gradual drift toward distance — less connection, less closeness, without a clear turning point
  • Feeling more like roommates or co-parents than partners
  • Difficulty knowing how to connect when it matters most

Whether the signs are obvious or not, couples therapy can be useful the moment you find yourself wondering whether things could be better.

How We Work

Our work focuses on understanding how each of you is approaching things — and developing more flexibility in how you respond to each other.

My couples work draws on training in Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy (EFT), completed through the New York Center for Emotionally Focused Therapy.  EFT is one of the most extensively researched approaches to couples therapy, with a focus on the emotional bond between partners — understanding what you and your partner need, what gets in the way of asking for it, and how to rebuild connection when it has been lost or damaged.

This work is also informed by couples training at the Westchester Center for the Study of Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy, which draws attention to the deeper patterns and personal histories you and your partner bring into a relationship — and how those shape what happens between you as a couple.

Together, we work on what is most relevant for you and your partner. This may include:

  • Communication and conflict patterns
  • Emotional distance and rebuilding connection
  • Trust — and what has damaged or strained it
  • Sex and intimacy
  • The individual histories and experiences each partner brings
  • How external pressures — work, family, finances — affect the relationship

Separation and Divorce

Couples therapy can also be helpful when a relationship is changing or coming to an end.

This may include:

  • Clarifying decisions about whether to stay or separate
  • Navigating difficult conversations with care
  • Managing the emotional weight of the transition
  • Thinking through how to move forward constructively — particularly when children are involved
