Guidance and Support for Early Adult Life Stage Issues

NYC Psychotherapy and Coaching

Men and women from 18 on into their early 30s are often perceived as young by society.  And this time of life can portrayed as an unusually carefree period.  Responsibility may be at a low while health is at its pinnacle and one’s potential for growth is often spoken of as if it is virtually limitless.  And, at the same time, early adults are encouraged to “have fun” or “live large,” before the “real responsibilities” of adulthood arrive.Yet in some ways this time period is often overlooked in terms of how difficult it may be for someone trying to move from childhood to adulthood, from school to work.  For many, this age is the first time in someone’s life that they’ll have to:

  • Take care of themselves
  • Worry about their future
  • Establish their personal and professional identity

You may be embarking on college or work for the first time, living alone, having their first real relationships, and learning who they are or want to be. Pressures arising from these situations can cause significant distress, and even one bad experience may have outsized influence on a person’s mind.  And, unfortunately, misguided or insufficiently thought-through decisions may actually make the future less rewarding or satisfying.  In other words, unlike when you were younger, choices and decisions may have real consequences!
